Educational Opportunities

Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship
This ACGME accredited fellowship provides one year of clinically based training in a high volume academic practice with diverse adult and pediatric populations. Emphasis is based on clinical, radiographic, and pathologic correlation of benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumors with care planning in a multidisciplinary setting. The Fellow participates in clinical and surgical care, surgical planning, academic conferences, and resident education. A multidisciplinary sarcoma conference, a comprehensive preoperative planning conference, and a radiographic consultation conference are held weekly. In addition, the fellow participates in the annual Florida Keys Musculoskeletal Oncology Review course. The fellow may pursue basic science or clinical research according to his/her interests during the fellowship year.

University of Miami Orthopaedic Residency Training Program
The Miami Sarcoma Group is dedicated to the clinical and surgical training of the orthopaedic surgery residents at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Orthopaedic surgery residents assist our team with the daily clinical care of both inpatients and outpatients. They participate in weekly orthopaedic oncology radiology review conferences and weekly multidisciplinary sarcoma conferences. The goal of resident education is to facilitate the development of a knowledge base and understanding of musculoskeletal tumors so as to properly diagnose patients with musculoskeletal disease. Equally important, the resident should develop the clinical judgment necessary to provide appropriate patient care and/or to refer patients to a fellowship trained orthopaedic oncologist for definitive treatment.

The Florida Keys Musculoskeletal Oncology Review Course is given each spring for orthopaedic residents, fellows, and practitioners. The course is taught by multidisciplinary faculty from the University of Miami and the Moffitt Cancer Center. The emphasis is on clinical, radiographic, and pathologic correlation in the diagnosis of bone and soft tissue tumors. The course serves well as a preparation for board examinations or an update on current practice patterns. The teaching format is both interactive and didactic and has been well received by past attendees. The course is held annually at the Cheeca Lodge, one of the finest luxury oceanfront resorts in the Florida Keys. The property sits on 27 lush acres in Islamorada, "the sport fishing capital of the world." Click here for information on the next course and registration information.
